12/27/2023 0 Comments Vanko review sherlockInstead of the aforementioned face punching, Tony hijacks the hearing to boast how far ahead of the competitors his tech is and refuses to hand over the suit, even after a pretty damning testimony from his long time friend (and new actor) James Rhodes, the first appearance of Don Cheadle (Terrence Who?). I can’t say I’m surprised by this brilliant performance, Rockwell is incredible in virtually any role he inhabits. ![]() Sam Rockwell plays this role perfectly, he is fantastically smarmy and someone you just want to punch in the face pretty much all the time. ![]() It is no surprise then that he is brought in as the technical expert in the hearing where the Government are trying to assume control of the Iron Man suit. A wannabe rival to Tony Stark, he is the government weapons designer and is desperate to exceed Tony’s achievements and replicate his life style as much as possible. Now enter the secondary villain of the film, Justin Hammer. So not only is his display to the crowds his ego going into overdrive, it is a compensation for the weakness and helplessness he is feeling inside. The Palladium in the arc reactor that is keeping him alive is also poisoning him. I think it’s very clever how rather than steering right down the alcoholic route seen in the comics (more on this later) the film gives us a different vulnerability, his chest piece is killing him. Already by this point in the film Tony Stark is pure comic book, even down to him hiding a dark secret from the world. ![]() He is loving the attention and the crowd is loving him. Iron Man free falls into the new STARK EXPO with all the bells and whistles, fireworks, sexy dancers and loud rock music you would imagine! This is Tony Stark turned up to 11. That’s enough about Russia, Tony’s introduction and first few scenes are the epitome of egotistical. My question about this scene is this, if he had the plans, knowledge and resources to build an arc reactor, why didn’t he do it before? Why did he have to wait for his dad to cop it? Anyway, Vanko has built something similar to Stark’s tech and he will be making his way to meet our hero. If you didn’t already pick up on Russian setting by this point, then Rourke downing Vodka straight from the bottle and, you know, his name being Ivan, would probably give you a clue. Picking up a few months after the events of the first film, we are initially introduced to Ivan Vanko, played by Mickey Rourke, the man who will become this films bad guy! Watching Tony’s Iron Man reveal and subsequently building his own miniature arc reactor in scenes which are very reminiscent of Tony’s own origin. So how would Marvel deal with their first sequel in a connected universe? Would it stack up to the original? We of course know the answers to these questions now, but let’s go back and take a look at the film itself. Tony Stark and Stark Industries made appearances in Bruce Banner’s first MCU outing and if you managed to see one of the deleted scenes, there was a brief iced Captain America cameo, all of this confirming the files are set in the same universe. ![]() Following the success of Iron Man it was inevitable a sequel would arrive eventually and the threads were starting to show connecting the new characters coming from Marvel Studios. We now arrive at the first sequel in the MCU, Iron Man 2 (2010).
